5050 by 2020 DA - Tathra Water Tower - Bega Valley
Council agrees to accept CEFE development application
May 29. 2008
The Bega Valley Shire Council will accept lodgement of a development application for the placement of the 50/50 by 2020 logo on the Tathra water reservoir.
The founder of Clean Energy for Eternity, Dr Matthew Nott, addressed Councillors before Tuesday’s Council meeting on a range of issues, including the proposal to use water towers in the shire to promote the 50/50 by 2020 message.
Council has already adopted a policy of promoting a community objective of reducing consumption of fossil fuels by 50 per cent and sourcing 50 per cent of the shire’s energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.
It has switched to Green Energy in all its facilities across the Shire and recently adopted a policy on wind turbines.
Dr Nott said that Clean Energy for Eternity had sought permission last year to paint 50/50 by 2020 on the Bermagui water tower and, after initial indications that it would be allowed, had been advised that the sign was classed as advertising and therefore was not permitted on residentially-zoned land.
He asked Councillors to reconsider that position with regard to the Tathra water tower.
When the matter came before the Council’s finance and infrastructure committee it was resolved to provide formal advice to CEFE that lodgement of a DA would be accepted.
If a DA for painting the slogan on the water reservoir is received it will be considered by Council staff in the usual way.
