Bermagui Weeds Meeting Venue Change
October 16, 2007: A meeting to discuss the findings of a survey of coastal environmental weeds set down for the Bermagui Community Centre has been moved to the Bermagui Country Club.
The meeting will be held on Saturday, October 20 from 10am until noon.
Council’s Noxious Weeds Manager Ann Herbert said the findings would be of interest to all.
“It is estimated that 70% of the environmental weeds invading native vegetation are initially garden plants,” Ms Herbert said.
“So it is not surprising that the greatest concentrations of environmental weeds on the far South Coast are close to gardens, especially in the reserves around our coastal villages.
“The current survey of coastal environmental weeds by local botanist Stuart Cameron has revealed that while these peri-urban areas are often seriously degraded by weeds, there are also large sections of the coast that remain in good condition.”
The meeting will be a chance for Bermagui residents to have input into the development of coastal weeds management action plans, targeting those areas most valued by local communities with community programs to restore degraded areas.
“I would encourage people to attend and take part in planning weed control activities in identified problem infestation areas,” Ms Herbert said.
“Engaging in programs to manage weeds needs significant community support and we are hoping to encourage that on Saturday and support community-driven projects.”
Morning tea will be provided.
