Driving Program a Credit to Community

October 17, 2007: Mayor Tony Allen has inspected first hand a young driver program that provides essential advice when it comes to young people getting behind the wheel.

The Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program is being supported by Bega Rotarians and will see more than 600 students from across the shire take part in the education event.

“This is a wonderful initiative that has been supported by police, driving instructors and other service groups across the shire,” Cr Allen said.

“With the support of the Sapphire Coast Kart Club at Frogs Hollow, soon to be drivers have been receiving essential advice when it comes to handling a motor vehicle, buying a car and all the associated guidance to take that big step in gaining a driver’s licence.

“Council has given its full support to this outstanding program and we have supplied resource materials as well as in-kind support.”

Cr Allen said any programs that supported road safety and the safety of the shire’s youth needed full community support.

“Bega Rotary is tackling an issue that has major benefits for our youth,” Cr Allen said.

“The safety of our young people is paramount, and giving them the tools to make informed decisions about driving can only enhance their driving skills and decision-making into the future.

“Students are getting excellent advice from experts in their field. It can only enhance the chances of creating good drivers on our roads.”

Cr Allen welcomed Bega Rotary’s invitation to see first-hand the program in action.

“I believe the program will continue to gather momentum and will be embraced by students across our shire. It offers a whole range of information that will have a positive influence on young people as they take that huge step of getting their licence, buying a car and making it on to our roads.”
