Death of Former Mayor Mick Allen
Tuesday, 05 January 2010 07:15

Mayor of the Bega Valley Shire, Cr Tony Allen, has extended the condolences of Council to the family of a former Shire President and Mayor, Leonard Raymond (Mick) Allen.

Mr Allen, who served on Bega Valley Council Shire from 1985 to 1993, died on Thursday, December 24, 2009, aged 79, in Clare Holland House, Canberra.

He was the husband of Alma and father of Margaret, Debbie and Ross.

Mick Allen was elected to Council in a by-election held in July 1985 and was Shire President from 1991 to 1993.

Following the transition to the new Local Government Act in 1993 he became the Shire’s first Mayor in 1993. He did not seek re-election in the 1993 election.

A former school teacher from Victoria Mick Allen moved to the Bega Valley as owner-manager of the Twofold Beach Caravan Park just outside Eden. He was a committed family man and a keen golfer

During his time on Council Mr Allen had a chequered period developing the caravan park and working with Council’s senior management.

The mayor said that while he had not served on the Council with Mr Allen, he understood from former Councillors that he was a good speaker and a clever debater and that the Local Government Act was always on the table for quick reference when he was in the Council Chamber.

The Allen family sold Twofold Beach Caravan Park several years ago and Mr and Mrs Allen moved to Queanbeyan.
