Sportsgrounds go smoke free to mark world no tobacco day
In recognition of World No Tobacco Day on 31 May 2011 Bega Valley Shire Council has commenced installing signage around its sportsgrounds to promote Council’s Outdoor Smoke Free Policy.

According to the World Health Organisation “The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2011 will be to highlight the importance of the need to protect present and future generations from the devastating health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke” said Greg O’Donnell Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator
“Bega Valley Shire Council is one of over 85 councils across NSW that have introduced smoke-free outdoor areas as a result of changing community attitudes towards smoking”. said Mr. O’Donnell.
Mick Sandling the president of the Junior Merimbula Pambula Bulldogs Rugby League Club said “that with the introduction of the Outdoor Smoke Free Policy the smokers at the football games have been utilising the smoking area within the car park and the system is working well.”
"Introducing smoke-free outdoor areas is a positive step that Council has taken to protect the community from second-hand smoke, promote positive health messages, and support smokers who are trying to quit," said Greg O’Donnell.
The Cancer Council in a recent survey found widespread support for outdoor smoking bans with 92% supporting bans in children's playgrounds, 85% outside workplace entrances, 80% in sports stadiums and 69% in outdoor dining areas.
"Thirty years ago we still had smoking in shopping centres, hospitals, schools, train stations, cinemas and inside restaurants, but now people recognise that smoke-free areas are good for everyone - particularly children," said Mr. O’Donnell.
Mr O’Donnell also added “that he would like to promote the lead taken by many smokers who dispose of their cigarette butts responsibly. Council has provided waste bins at all sports grounds to aid in proper waste disposal.”
