Bega Valley Shire Council standing committees

Bega Valley Shire Councillors elected the chairs of Standing Committees for the next year at their first meeting last week.

The Community, Cultural and Economic Committee is chaired by Cr Paul Pincini. It considers all health, welfare and community services.

It reviews the management of all library, gallery and cultural services and their delivery and considers programs provided for young people, the aged and other disadvantaged demographic groups in the shire.

Proposals for economic development, education and tourism as well as development, acquisition lease or sale of Council property also come under its consideration.

Cr Keith Hughes chairs the Corporate Management Committee which considers and reviews Council’s Management Plan in collaboration with the Finance and Infrastructure Committee.

It facilitates communication between the Council and the community and identifies and investigates areas where internal and external practices could be enhanced and improved for the mutual benefit of the Council and the community.

The committee also considers matters relating to Council’s organisational structure, Code of Conduct, Code of Meeting Practice and other codes and polices not addressed by other standing committees.

The Finance and Infrastructure Committee is chaired by Cr Michael Britten.
It considers and reviews the annual budget, loan program and, where appropriate, submissions for external funding.

It also recommends the schedule of fees and charges and considers and prioritises capital works on an annual basis.

The committee considers all infrastructure issues, particularly changes to service levels.

It develops strategic direction for the management of development of water and sewerage systems business plans and for waste management issues, particularly initiatives in waste minimisation and recycling practices.

Review of Section 94, Section 94A and Section 64 charges and policy and among its responsibilities as well as parking, streetscapes, beautification and amenity issues.

It also considers all risk management and insurance matters.

Cr Pat Campbell chairs the Planning and Environment Committee which considers and recommends outcomes regarding development applications.

It also considers Development Control Plans, planning guidelines and policies and reviews Council’s Local Environmental Plan.

The committee assists in the formulation of strategic land use plans and makes recommendations on plans of management for Council reserves and other lands under its control.

It also recommends policies for pollution control functions with regard to Council’s obligations under the Pollution of the Environment legislation.
