John Murphy speaks about the training and nutrition requirements for a successful Navy George Bass Surf Boat Marathon, the toughest surf boat race in the world.
The 36km course, the longest leg of the race, faced a strong south east wind and swell all the way. It was a five and a half hour row, testing all competitors and causing some to retire.
John Murphy said “Two years of hard training, both at the gym and in the boat has paid off, but you never train in those conditions.”
“We’ve been drinking electrolyte drinks instead of water” said Murphy on Friday morning ” and eating lots of carbohydrate food such as bananas on our changeovers.”
Murphy, looking relaxed after a night’s rest, said “Once your body runs out of fuel it starts devouring itself, starting with the fat, so good nutrition is the key to maintaining stamina.”
