Summer Reading Program
February 28, 2008
Young readers were encouraged to make books part of their summer this year with the Bega Valley Shire library’s Summer Reading Program.

Some of the participants in this year’s Summer Reading Program with children’s librarian Anne Moore. They are (back row, from left) Lillian Green, Lachlan Sims, Matthew Sims, Josh Johnson, Meg Johnson, Kate Monck and Emily Monck. (Front): Jasper Green, Becky, Jorja and Jack Robbers and Ashlee Monck.
Children under 14 years joined the program using their library card and received a “goody bag”.
This year the theme was superheroes so the goodies included a drink bottle, Spiderman pencils, notebooks etc and a “superheroes” wrist band.
There were 138 participants in the program and between them they read 740 books over six weeks.
Each time a child read five books he or she entered a weekly draw to win a book, a talking book, or a voucher from Top Video in Bega or the Merimbula Ice Creamery.
Last week, at the end of the program, children gathered at the Bega library for the big draw from the names of all the children who had read books for prizes including vouchers for Magic Mountain, Merimbula Aquarium and the PictureShow Man as well as talking books, DVDs, stickers and superhero pencil cases. Children were invited to attend the draw dressed as their favourite superhero and Jasper Green arrived dressed as Captain Underpants.
Children’s librarian Anne Moore congratulated the children who participated in the Summer Reading Program and thanked the sponsors: Magic Mountain, Merimbula Aquarium, PictureShow Man, Top Video Bega, Merimbula Ice Creamery, Bolinda Publishing, Libraries AV, Keith Ainsworth Publishers.
