SUSTAINABILITY ASSISTANCE FOR BUSINESSES - Bega Valley

Businesses in the Bega Valley Shire now have a helping hand to save money and become better environmental managers, following the appointment of a local business sustainability officer.

Vickie Williamson has joined Business Treading Lightly, a $2million program that helps businesses save money through efficient energy, water and waste management.

She is based at Bega Valley Council and will work with businesses throughout the
Shire.

Ms Williamson has been living in the Bega Valley for more than three years and has practical experience embedding sustainability into businesses and households.

She will initially work with the hospitality and tourism industries to help improve their economic, environmental and social sustainability, providing support through training, information and up-to-date resources.

The program will be extended to other industries in 2009.

“I am really looking forward to helping local businesses become better environmental managers,” Ms Williamson said.

“Along with environmental benefits, businesses who work sustainably make resource and productivity savings, manage risks, exceed regulatory compliance and develop a ‘green’ market advantage over competitors.”

Business Treading Lightly is administered by Southern Councils Group, of which Bega Valley Shire Council is a member.

Council’s general manager Peter Tegart, a key supporter of the project, said Business Treading Lightly had already demonstrated cost savings and environmental benefits.

“This is a practical way we can help the long-term viability of businesses in our shire in a time of environmental uncertainty.”

Business Treading Lightly is funded by the NSW Environmental Trust and works with NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change through their Sustainability Advantage Program.
