Tourists Enjoy a Great Time in Merimbula
October 15, 2007: When it comes to turning on a fine time for our tourists Merimbula has been doing a pretty good job in terms of weather, whales and a vibrant business district.
It has been a highly successful and extremely busy Visitor Information Centre in Merimbula with a regular influx of people culminating in more than 450 visitors a day coming through the doors during the Labour Day long weekend.
Since the handover of the centre to the Bega Valley Shire Business Forum, tourist officer Jenny Francis and a team of volunteers have been busily meeting the needs and wants of our visitors.
“It was fantastic to see so many people in Merimbula during the school holidays and importantly their appetite for supporting local attractions and businesses,” Ms Francis said.
“Whale watching tours have been extremely popular and we have had many requests from visitors wanting to explore the other great features of the shire.”
Ms Francis said she was delighted that visitors were keen to explore the whole shire.
“While many have made their base in Merimbula, they are eager to see what the rest of the shire has to offer, it really is good to see support for the tourism industry across the board,” Ms Francis said.
Mayor Tony Allen said Council was grateful for the support of industry representatives, the Bega Valley Business Forum, Ms Francis and the volunteers who had assured a smooth transition with the take over of Sapphire Coast Tourism and the booking service.
“The feedback we have received is that it is business as usual,” Cr Allen said.
“We are continuing to work on a licence agreement to run the Merimbula centre and expressions of interest will be called in due course.
“For the visitor, the centre is still providing up to date information and for many it is an integral part when it comes to organising their activities.
“I would also ask tourism operators and tourism-related businesses to make sure they are represented at the centre with brochures and any related information. Our tourists certainly have a desire for information on all areas of the shire.
“I would also welcome visitors to our region and I am sure they will enjoy their experience and look to the Sapphire Coast as a future holiday destination.”
