Twofold Marine Park from Bermagui to Vic Border

Liberal MP Gary Nairn has joined his State Liberal Colleague, Andrew Constance, to fight a proposal for a new marine park in the Twofold bio-shelf, which would extend from Bermagui to the Victoria border, in NSW State Government waters.

“Labor has not ruled out a new marine park and I am fighting to protect jobs and industry in towns such as Eden and Bermagui,” Mr Nairn said.

“The National Liberal Government has invested $220 million in the Securing our Fishing Future package designed to assist local industry in Eden-Monaro.

“This investment is now under threat from the Labor Party, which in securing Greens preferences is hell bent on destroying access to fisheries through the implementation of a new marine park,” he said.

Local recipients who have transformed their businesses include the Twofold Bay Fishermen’s Co-op ($232,055), Southland Fish Supplies ($166,844) and Pelagic Fish Processors ($495,829) and Bobbins Transport ($450,000).

“Fishing related businesses and communities on the Far South Coast have invested millions of private funds in partnership with Federal Government monies.

“Labor has put all of this at risk due to the threat of fishing restrictions that would be implemented should a new marine park go ahead,” Mr Nairn said.

“Peter Garrett and Labor’s Mike Kelly will destroy the timber and fishing industries in our region,” Mr Nairn said.

“Labor candidate Mike Kelly has already stated that he will ‘reorientate’ the timber industry and now he wants to reorientate the fishing industry too with a new marine park,” Mr Nairn said.

“The Greens preference deal between the Labor candidate and the Greens’ Keith Hughes will do enormous damage to our strong local economy with jobs under threat in the timber and fishing industries,” Mr Nairn said.
