Viewing Platform Burnt - Ford Oval, Merimbula

There are serious concerns for the health of vandals who burnt the viewing platform at Ford Park in Merimbula on Saturday night.

Bega Valley Shire Council group manager of Infrastructure, Doug Mein, said the pine timbers in the viewing platform had been treated with a substance which could have released toxic fumes in the fire.

“There is a good chance that the people who were present during the fire will have inhaled the fumes and could have suffered damage to internal organs,” Mr Mein said.

He said anyone involved in the fire should seek medical attention.

Mr Mein said there was evidence of a party having been held in the park near the viewing platform and the toilets nearby had been severely vandalised.

“The toilets will be closed until they can be repaired but the viewing platform is beyond help and will be demolished,” he said.

Mr Mein called on anyone who was a witness to the vandalism to contact the Merimbula police on 6495 1366 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
