Willow Tree to be Pruned
The willow tree that has provided a popular meeting place for local Aboriginal people for many years on the corner of Gipps and Bega Streets in Bega is to be pruned.
Bega Valley Shire Council’s manager of civil assets and urban projects, Mark Canaider, said the tree had been damaged by fire over the weekend.
It had been assessed by a qualified arborist who advised that the willow should have its canopy reduced as a public safety measure.
Mr Canaider said he had consulted with the Bega Local Aboriginal Land Council about the matter and the executive had supported the decision to prune the tree.
“This is an important meeting place for local Kooris so we need to ensure that it does not pose any safety concerns for the people who gather underneath it,” Mr Canaider said.
“The tree has been cordoned off until the work can be done, which I expect to be within the next few days.”
